MYaestra Light Studies : Designing architecture through daylight

Every architectural project begins with a series of questions.
What is the purpose of the building?
Who will inhabit it?
How should its spaces relate to one another?
These questions define the brief.
At MYaestra, another question appears just as early.
How should light move through this architecture?
Long before discussions about finishes, furniture, or even the precise appearance of a building, we begin thinking about daylight.
Because architecture is rarely experienced first through material.
It is experienced through light.
Daylight shapes how space is perceived, how movement unfolds, and how atmosphere changes throughout the course of a day.
For us, designing architecture begins with designing daylight.

Reading the Site
Every site already possesses its own relationship with the sun.
Orientation.
Climate.
Surrounding buildings.
Existing vegetation.
Topography.
Long before the first wall is drawn, these conditions begin determining how daylight will enter a project.
Rather than imposing form onto a site, we begin by understanding its natural rhythm.
Where does the first morning light arrive?
Which areas remain shaded through the afternoon?
How does the western sun affect comfort?
Where might reflected light become more valuable than direct sunlight?
The site often contains many of the answers.
Our role is not to resist those conditions, but to work with them.
This way of thinking changes the design process itself.
Instead of asking what a wall should look like, we ask what kind of light it should create.
Where should daylight enter?
Where should it be softened?
Where should shadow remain?
Only after these questions begin finding answers do materials emerge.
Stone, timber, plaster, or concrete each respond differently to daylight, but they are chosen to support the intended atmosphere rather than define it.
Material refines experience.
Light establishes it.
Daylight is never static.
It changes every hour.
Every season.
Every year.
A room filled with gentle eastern light at sunrise becomes an entirely different environment by late afternoon.
Summer sunlight enters differently from winter sunlight.
Shadows lengthen.
Textures appear and disappear.
Because of this, our light studies never focus on a single perfect moment.
We study how architecture performs across time.
The objective is not to create one compelling photograph.
It is to create spaces that remain engaging throughout the day and throughout the year.
Architecture should reward repeated experience rather than first impressions alone.
Shadow plays an equally important role.
It is often mistaken for the absence of light, yet it is one of architecture's most expressive design tools.
A carefully positioned wall slows the movement of sunlight across a room.
A projecting roof creates a gradual transition between exterior brightness and interior calm.
A deep opening allows changing patterns of shadow to animate otherwise still surfaces.
Rather than eliminating shadow, we design with it.
Because shadow gives architecture rhythm.
It reveals depth.
It creates moments of pause.
It allows light itself to become visible.
Some projects naturally invite courtyards.
Others require light wells.
Dense urban sites often depend upon filtered daylight introduced through deep reveals, screens, vegetation, or carefully positioned openings.
Although these strategies differ, the intention remains constant.
The objective is never maximum brightness.
It is meaningful light.
Light that supports comfort.
Light that guides movement.
Light that strengthens atmosphere.
Every project asks for its own response, but the underlying question remains unchanged.

Composing Experience
Architecture is understood through sequence rather than isolated rooms.
A shaded entrance compresses perception before a brighter corridor encourages movement.
A courtyard introduces release.
A softly illuminated room invites stillness.
By varying the quality of daylight throughout a project, spaces acquire distinct identities without relying upon excessive materials or ornament.
Light becomes the thread connecting one experience to the next.
It quietly composes the architectural narrative.
This way of thinking informs every project we undertake.

We begin by understanding the site.
From there we study the movement of the sun throughout the day and across the seasons.
Openings are then positioned to admit, filter, or frame daylight with intention.
Those openings shape how people move through the building.
Only then does atmosphere begin to emerge.
Light is therefore not the final layer of architecture.
It is one of its earliest decisions.
Contemporary software allows architects to simulate daylight with remarkable precision.
These tools are valuable.
They help measure comfort, environmental performance, and technical efficiency.
Yet our light studies extend beyond simulation.
They are design investigations.
They ask questions software alone cannot answer.
How should a space feel when someone enters?
Where should the eye naturally come to rest?
When should architecture reveal itself?
When should it remain quiet?
The objective is not simply to predict light.
It is to compose experience.
Every architectural decision influences the way light enters, moves, and transforms a space.
Walls do more than define rooms.
Openings do more than provide views.
Courtyards do more than bring daylight indoors.
Together, they choreograph the experience of architecture.
This is why light studies occupy such an important place within our design process.
They are not technical exercises completed after the architecture has been designed.
They are part of the architecture itself.
At MYaestra, light is not added to architecture.
It is designed as architecture.
